Sapphires: What you need to know
Sapphires are a type of precious gemstone, and one of the most commonly used in fine jewellery, together with diamonds, rubies and emeralds. The stone is known for its rich blue colour, however, sapphires can come in a multitude of other shades, including pink, yellow, orange and more.
Blue sapphires are by far the most popular, giving off an appeal that is sophisticated, luxurious and incredibly chic and stylish. The gemstone also has a long standing association with royalty, which only adds to its desirability and stature.
Like all precious gemstones, sapphires are formed deep within the earth’s crust under intense conditions. Scientifically, sapphires are known as corundum, which is the name of the igneous rock they come from. Crystals form from the minerals present when the corundum rock begins to cool. As the conditions during each transformation process are different due to changes in the environment, the resulting sapphires vary greatly in size, colour and clarity.
This composition makes sapphires one of the hardiest of precious stones, meaning they are a great choice for a ring designed to last a lifetime. Not only this but, over the years, they have also built a strong symbolism of fidelity, truth and faithfulness, which increases their suitability for your special ring.
Types of sapphires
Although blue sapphires are the most recognisable, the precious gemstone can come in a variety of other colours. The colour of a sapphire is dependent on the minerals and elements present during its formation process. For example, the presence of titanium in the corundum is generally what creates a blue sapphire stone.
Other possible shades of sapphire include pink, yellow, orange, white, and purple. Within each of these colour categories, there are also endless shades, tones and intensities which help make each and every sapphire unique.
Interestingly, the only colour not classified as a sapphire is red. Red gems that form in the same way that sapphires do are called rubies.
